Pizza: Reviews

Its safe to say I consumed more pizza in the last month than I’ve eaten in the last 6 months. Well, maybe not, but the point is a whole lot of pizza has been consumed! Even though I visited a good deal of pizzeria’s, there are still a number of places that I have yet to try. This mission will be ongoing, so as I taste, I will update the blog.

1. Jules Thin Crust

I really wanted to find good pizza close to my home. I drive past Jules all the time and never stopped in to try their thin crust pizza. Jules prides itself on quality ingredients. They serve mostly organic and all natural ingredients. We decided to order a pizza to-go on a Sunday evening for dinner. We ordered Kim’s pie(roasted 100% natural chicken, portobello mushrooms, caramelized onions, mozzarella, balsamic bbq sauce, chives). The flavor combination was nice but it was not a reason to phone your mom back home. I was telling my friends about the visit and my friend Marsharelle mentioned that I shouldve tried the pizza while dining in.Totally different experience in her opinion. Perhaps. We will table this place for a while. I do however appreciate the quality ingredients they use.

2. Bar Lucca

This place is a forgotten gem. My sister was in the Conshohocken area and called me to meet up for lunch. As usual, she left it up to me to pick the place and as usual I was undecided. I finally chose Bar Lucca in an effort to perform “research and development” for my blog(someone’s gotta to do the dirty work). We ordered the margherita pizza and a strawberry and prosciutto salad. It wasnt until the pizza came out that I remembered why I loved this place so much. The chili oil! Every pizza comes with chili oil and fresh herbs on the side. The little things! The oil is just spicy enough to compliment the creaminess of the pizza. If you are in the Conshy area and are craving pizza, this is your place!

3. Anthony’s Coal Fired Pizza

I wanted to try this place for quite some time but another restaurant always distracted me. In another effort to find a pizzeria that is closer to my home than one that is located in downtown Philly, I gave this place a try. I am happy I did! This pizza is very filling. I can easily eat 2-3 slices depending on the size of the pizza. I had 1 slice of the broccoli rabe and sausage pizza and was stuffed. My only gripe about this pizza was the crust. They have to figure out a way to keep the crust from burning. The crust is an extremely important of pizza and for it to be burned is pure blasphemy! Nonetheless, I enjoyed this pizza and plan to visit again in the future.

4. In Riva

You ever walk into a restaurant and instantly know that you are about to have an awesome meal? That happened. This place has a great atmosphere, memorable character, and the food is so unapologetically awesome! We were seated at the center family style table. This long rectangle table, made out of the owner’s parents’┬áhouse doors, set the tone of the restaurant. We started with the arugula and mushroom salad and ordered the margherita and a special pizza that had brisket, brussel sprouts, onions, mustard seeds. Words can’t describe how awesome this food was. Just go! Like now!

5. Birra

Spending times with friends always makes me happy. I especially love when the time is spent eating food. Shonn and I had dinner with our friends, Darron and Jen.

We met at Birra for dinner. The layout of the restaurant is pretty cool. You get to see the pizzas made as you wait for your table. I was even more excited when I saw the amazing combinations coming out of the oven. Shonn was having a conversation with the guy who was running pizzas and asked him what he would recommend. This guy just happen to be the owner and recommended the mussels(best in Philly he claims), the loaded potato and mac and cheese pizzas. It should be noted that I adore restaurant owners who engage the patrons. He was so personable and attentive.

We were seated and decided to start with the breads and spreads and meatballs al forno. My favorite spread was the white bean ragu. Very simple, silky, tasty bean puree. The meatballs were yummy as well. We also ordered the roasted duck pizza and the loaded potato pizza. Darron ordered the jerk chicken penne pasta. The roasted duck pizza can easily described as a guilty pleasure. So decadent and rich in flavor. The loaded potato pizza was exactly that. It tasted just like a loaded baked potato. Amazing!

6. Nomad

We went to this year’s Manayunk StrEAT food festival and Nomad pizza was there dishing out their goodness. I reviewed Nomad in my last post but wanted to give a second review because they are just that good. This place is my absolute favorite and will always be my number one recommendation when someone asks me who makes the best pizza in Philly. If I lived closer I would be here on a weekly basis. At least. You are the best Nomad!!
